Sandyford
Sandyford is located at the end of Jesmond’s Osborne Road and is a popular student area due to its close proximity to both Newcastle University and Northumbria University. Sandyford is very popular with students from Northumbria University and the new business facility as it is slightly closer than Jesmond is to the campus.
Sandyford is very affordable and being so close to town offers students many options
Housing
Sandyford is a popular residential area for students attending Northumbria University and has a good mix of housing which is mostly Victorian terraced of the following types:
- Tyneside flats – these can be upstairs or downstairs
- Maisonettes – generally upstairs flats that have had attic conversions
- Houses – terraced houses from 4 to 8 bedrooms
Generally all of the student housing has to be licenced by the local council under HMO regulations
Shopping
Sandyford has its own shopping area which has everything from an Italian bistro, an Italian restaurant, three sandwich shops, an award winning fish’n’chip shop, a Chinese takeaway, a Post Office through to supermarkets right on its doorstep and is also a great place to go and eat out.
For major supermarkets there is a choice of Morrisons and Waitrose.
Sport and recreation
Sandyford has a large park, locally called “the rec” which has a football pitch with a running track around it. For outdoor enthusiasts Sandyford is in the middle of Armstrong Park and Heaton Park both of which have tennis courts and bowling facilities. There are several gyms in the area and also a popular swimming pool. Being so close to the city center it is very easy to use all of the sporting outlets situated there.
Restaurants
The dining in Sandyford is more low key than Jesmond and it has some great cafes and bistros which are mainly Italian, however there are a number of great take aways for people who like pizza, Indian, Chinese and good old fashioned fish and chips.
Nightlife
Students love Sandyford as it is very affordable and being so close to town there are no transport costs but also it has some great venues like Mr Lynch and As You Like It. Due to its location it is easy for students to socialise in either the city centre or Jesmond but for those who lke a local pub look no further than the Bluebell in Jesmond Dene
